ABSTRACT
This chapter starts with some theoretical assumptions and reflections, for it will give an idea of where the author stands and how the author thinks. The author uses the title 'archetypes on the couch'; not from the couch but on the couch. In other words, the author explores the nature of the concept 'archetype', to look at it as one might look at a patient, listening and receptive to what is overt or covert. The concept of the archetypes was born—or at least was conceived—as a result of that archetypal transference/counter-transference clash, the war of the two giants, Sigmund Freud and Jung. The chapter describes some cases in order to show the different relationships a person may have to the archetypal processes. As a final point, the author explores whether the concept 'archetypal' is useful to the theoretician, the analyst-clinician, and the patient.
