ABSTRACT

To understand the utility of agent-based models to explore the dynamics of coupled human and natural systems, we compare the features of two such models: one of the Wolong Nature Reserve in China (see Chapter 12) and another of the Chitwan National Park in Nepal. We find that four issues are particularly important for modeling CHANS: representation agents and the landscape, the need for standardized modules, the impacts of scheduling on model outcomes, and using caution in interpreting “surprises” in model outcomes.
