ABSTRACT
What is the role of art in rural planning? Beyond the recent focus on creative industries and economic and social development, there is little research that explores what art can offer. Informed by classical pragmatism, this chapter considers the utility of art as a mode of inquiry. Drawing on two examples of artistic-ethnographic fieldwork, this chapter argues that art can facilitate a way of knowing transactional space and as such support deliberative planning. In support of future practice, the conclusion suggests that artist in residency programmes can be utilised in support of rural planning research.
