ABSTRACT

Twenty-first century healthcare imposes new burdens on medical staff that impact the wellbeing of patients, organizations, and the professionals themselves. The ongoing challenge of caring for very sick people is exacerbated by corporate and government-driven demand for greater efficiency and cost savings. Fewer staff must accomplish more in less time. Staff must be all things to all people: patients, management, and government regulators. This squeeze produces inordinate amounts of stress that manifest as burnout, turnover, and medical error.
