ABSTRACT

In the light of literature review, Chapter 3 sets out details of salient features and challenges that may be encountered during surface composite fabrication on AA7050-T7541 alloy via FSP. This chapter begins with the strengthening mechanisms and phases in this alloy, including the thermal treatment, such as solutionizing, quenching, and natural & artificial age hardening. A section is also included on the thermal/thermo-mechanical changes that are created in the alloy microstructure during surface composite fabrication via FSP. The effect of processing on the strengthening phases is also discussed. Importantly, the temperature evolution during FSP on AA7050 is meticulously discussed, and the effect of prevailing temperatures on the strengthening phases is also given. Importantly, actual temperature data acquired through experiments have been included and the thermal model of selected experiments has also been included. Such temperature data and thermal model give a realistic idea on the temperature rise in the AA7050 plate during various combinations of FSP parameters during surface composite fabrication.
