ABSTRACT

A novel series of tests involving the growth of gravel dunes from an initially flat bed is presented. The work is intended as a contribution addressing the existing lack of information and data on gravel dunes. The present tests indicate that the formation of gravel dunes is similar to that of sand dunes, and further suggest that existing predictive equations for sand dunes are equally applicable to gravel dunes. This work confirms the recent finding that, in contrast to the case of sand dunes whose spatial wave spectrum exhibits a -3 slope, such spectrum for gravel dunes follows a -2 slope.
