ABSTRACT

Assessment is a pivotal piece in the instruction cycle. There are many different types of assessment. Students should be part of the process and involved in the conversations and plans based on the assessments. Assessing for conceptual understanding involves looking at what students know about the concept. Assessing for reasoning is about seeing if students can think logically. So, asking them questions that require them to think and explain their reasoning is an important part of the assessment cycle. Assessing for strategic competence involves looking at student thinking about how to work with numbers. Math Running Records are given from the end of kindergarten through middle school. It is an interview assessment that tells about student thinking, student strategy, and student disposition. The Running Record has three parts. The first part assesses for automaticity and accuracy. The second part assesses for flexibility and efficiency. The third part taps into the student’s mathematical disposition.
