ABSTRACT

One particularly intriguing Thinking Through Geography strategy is called ‘Making animals’. It got this name because in its first incarnation students were asked to design animals for particular ecosystems. The ‘Making animals’ strategy has three important characteristics:

Students are given

• a context to work within; • features to choose to design something to fit/operate within that context; and • some constraints on their choice, for example the number of features, the

amount they can spend if each item is costed.
