ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the assessment methods commonly used for research candidature and offers advice on how to approach them. It begins with the specific research question(s) or testable hypotheses, explain the methods chosen, and then contains a simple description of the research design. Assessment of research training achievement is in principle similar to the assessment of any training programme: there is formative assessment, summative assessment, and in-training assessment. Within training assessment may include the original research proposal, drafts of literature reviews, confirmation and exit seminars, a written product and some form of oral defence of a presentation of the research project. The initial research proposal and an early draft of a literature review are usually both formative assessment and hurdles that determine eligibility to proceed. The most commonly included formal assessment during research training is assessment of academic presentation skills. Research students should invest time in studying the assessment requirements of their particular university and course.
