ABSTRACT
Neural network theory holds great promise for a new, biologically based conceptual framework for psychiatry. This article lays the groundwork for a network theory of manic-depressive illness and related psychiatric disorders. Pertinent empirical evidence and principles of neural network theory are reviewed in support of the following proposal.
