ABSTRACT

We began this text with two short statements concerning our own personal experiences of setting out on the road to becoming a sports coach. Our own journeys between then and now have been littered with implicit and explicit learning episodes that, upon reflection, have shaped our philosophies and informed how we coach. The most recent of these moments have come in the editing of this book, in particular reading, digesting, contemplating and applying contributions from each of the authors, which has added to our learning process as coach educators. We are grateful to each contributor for this sharing of experience and their willingness to be openly reflective about their own practice in order to enlighten readers about their specialist areas and demonstrate how even the most experienced and accomplished coaches encounter problems and dilemmas along the way. It has been our intention for coaches at all levels to be open to the prospect of this book guiding, assisting, informing or confirming their practice. Whilst by no means exhaustive, this short plenary draws together four of the more substantive themes that have emerged from the narrative, all of which can be viewed as key concerns for the future development of sport coaching.
