Parmenides'theoryoftheblockuniversewasthefirstdeductivecosmology.Onemightevencallitthefirstdeductivesystemoftheoretical physics.Idonotwishtodiscussherethepurelyverbalquestionwhether Parmenideshimselfshouldorshouldnotberegardedasthefirsttheoreticalphysicist.Itisenoughthathebecamethefather,orperhapsthe grandfather,ofalltheoreticalphysics,and,moreespecially,oftheatomic theory.
