ABSTRACT

The classical concept of penis envy has little to do with envy. On the contrary it conveys intense admiration, emulation, and identification for all things masculine. Some men with undersized organs emphasise their smallness or inadequacies in order to appear pitiable and to put others to shame. The penis, indeed, epitomises attachment. Paradoxically, it also represents detachment, that is, the possibility of separating from the breast in order to establish a distinct sense of self. The penis that little girls miss is the freedom from maternal domination and the ability to control their own bodies and lives. Male brutality encompasses the whole range of vengeful rage towards women for possessing masculine in addition to feminine prowess, the breast plus a phallus. The complement of “penis greed” is the “greedy penis”, an organ that thrusts its way into things in order to control, possess, propagate, dominate, devour, or destroy them.
