ABSTRACT

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a term used to describe a group of behavioural symptoms that include inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.

These characteristics may be noticed at an early age and become more noticeable when children start school: they occur in more than one situation, e.g. at home and school. Most children are diagnosed between the ages of 6 and 12 and can be identified as having ADHD regardless of intellectual ability (but often have learning difficulties): there may also be additional problems, e.g. sleep and anxiety disorders.
