ABSTRACT

Distance education has operated in several somewhat separate technological worlds. These can be summarized as: primarily broadcast (or one-to-many) technologies such as television and print; asynchronous online teaching through the Internet and the World Wide Web; and synchronous, two-way technologies, such as audio-and video-conferencing, and Web-conferencing. This chapter will focus on the potential and limitations of these synchronous or ‘real-time’ two-way telecommunications technologies for teaching and learning.
