ABSTRACT
The term "audit" is usually associated with finance and accounting. Clinical audit is a different process. It is a process of systematically reviewing and improving the quality of care we give to patients. It is a continuous process rather than a finite project and is best conceptualized as a cycle. This chapter gives guidance on each stage of the audit cycle. The clinical audit process is directly dependent on clinical standards and guidelines. The function of a clinical audit project is to: present evidence that standards are being adhered to; and find out whether the standards are acceptable or whether they should be modified or enhanced. Re-auditing is an essential part of the audit cycle. Its purpose is to identify what impact the audit has had. Because part of the audit process involves making changes to practice, a re-audit can never be identical to the initial audit.
