ABSTRACT

Africa is a culturally, institutionally, geographically, and economically diverse and complex continent spanning 54 countries, each with its own characteristics. This presents a variety of business and policy challenges, as well as opportunities. Notwithstanding these challenges, many African organizations have learnt to brace themselves and adapt quickly, to overcome the difficulties, and mitigate risks, thereby turning Africa into the next frontier for growth. Indeed, there are a number of African organizations that are leading the charge in terms of creativity and innovation in industries including media and telecommunications, retail, and food and beverage. We suggest that, in order to manage change effectively in this dynamic environmental context, and to continue on this growth trajectory, African organizations need authentic leaders as change agents. Authentic leaders position their organizations to achieve positive outcomes by communicating fairly, honestly, and transparently with their employees, empowering them, and facilitating a favorable organizational culture and climate.
