ABSTRACT

The overlap between the schizophrenia and autism spectrums is an area seeing a resurgence of research interest in recent years. On purpose we've included quite a bit of discussion on schizophrenia because of the realisation that there may be shared aetiological agents between the conditions. The interesting role of gluten and casein in cases of schizophrenia and autism also hints at some shared pathways and therapeutic targets. Indeed the suggestion that a Gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) diet might be a potential intervention option for autism stems to a large extent from the work of the late Curt Dohan and his observations of schizophrenia and food. The continued interest in schizophrenia and gluten and casein has continued over the intervening years, to some extent overtaking what has been done in autism research circles. At the same time, however, such research in schizophrenia potentially provides valuable clues as to where autism research could also start looking.
