ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses methods of avoiding Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) inspections. In the event of an inspection, the chapter also discusses what the people might expect during such an inspection. After introductions and the presentation of credentials, the inspector is to conduct an opening conference which includes an explanation of the nature and purpose of the inspection, including a description of the general scope of the inspection. As a part of the opening conference, the inspector will typically request to review certain written documents of the company prior to the commencement of the walk-around inspection. Remember that inspectors are human beings and may take such a request personally, which could influence the inspector's state of mind if and when he/she returns with an inspection warrant. It is highly advisable that the people consider the appointment and training of a “key person.” Generally, the scope of the inspection is left to the discretion of OSHA.
