ABSTRACT

The first piece of work that the author did after the brain injury was commissioned by the photographer Eve Arnold, who had been a kind friend throughout her recovery. She had planned an exhibition of photographs taken by the five woman members (including herself) of the photographic agency, Magnum. Photographs are in many ways a portrait of the photographer, and one learns a lot about the best – Imogen Cunningham, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Lee Miller, Andre Kertesz, Eve Arnold herself – by looking at the work they have created. After an individual is discharged from post-acute neurorehabilitation it is a process of expanding focus and resuming life roles in whatever form this takes; that is, integrating back into the community. This focus and approach maximises an individual’s quality of life and, consequently, functional outcomes.
