ABSTRACT

Though there is no caste head and shoulders above all others in the economic affairs of the village, the Rajputs have whatever priority exists. The position is very different when we turn to leadership in the village—for here the Rajputs are clearly dominant, both in positions of statutory political authority and also in the informal and traditional contexts of inter-caste village activity. People of other castes play parts on these occasions; but even when they themselves are influential, their caste group as a whole does not have the weight of the Rajput group (nor, very often, the interest in village matters possessed by Rajputs as a whole).
