ABSTRACT

Information technology (IT) has evolved from just being the base neural network that is responsible for survival in a living organism. It is the enabler for independent thought and stimulus response, hence the need for a “higher level” of IT utilization. Organizations need to transform from IT generators to information processing organizations, and the tool that will help them achieve this goal is Lean. The understanding and expectations around IT differ tremendously between practitioners of IT and the business community in general. Wipro recognized the need for process performance efficiencies in IT and implemented Lean throughout their internal IT process. Later they expanded their Lean IT capabilities to include external clients. IT frequently misses schedules and is plagued with cost overruns. Any other functional area of the enterprise with the poor historical performance of IT would have been eliminated or outsourced long ago.
