ABSTRACT

Image lters are speci cally designed to remove unwanted image components and/or enhance wanted ones. Mathematical morphology, applying set-theoretic concept, provides an approach to digital image processing and analysis based on the geometric shape of objects. Using an a priori determined structuring element, features in an image can be extracted, suppressed, or preserved by applying morphological operators. Morphological lters, using the basic operations such as dilation, erosion, opening, and closing, are suited for many purposes including digitization, enhancement, compression, restoration, segmentation, and description.
