ABSTRACT

The basic pattern exercise is the most broadly applicable and could probably be used to generate any pattern. This chapter provides exercises that follow to generate specific kinds of patterns. The exercises have the potential to generate many patterns—more than one for each element. Creating even simple patterns can take a huge amount of both generalized game knowledge and knowledge of specific games. It is essential to look at the actual pattern one has generated and find examples of its use that are not examples of the functional element. Functional patterns are provided to generate a pattern based on the functional element of mechanical character progression.
