ABSTRACT
A specific mechanism for generating a multiverse comes by combining the popular research themes of string/M theory with eternal inflation. Multiverse proponents are often vague about how the parameter values are selected across the defined ensemble. One possible explanation for why the universe is as it is, and why in particular it is biophilic, is that it has been created with the requisite properties by a loving God who expressly wishes that life and mind emerge at some stage in the evolution of the cosmos. It is ironical that the multiverse theory, which is frequently motivated by the attempt to expunge teleology from cosmology, is actually hoist by its own petard. In a truly general multiverse, there is no reason why the laws that may be instantiated in a subset of universes should always be of the traditional differential equation variety.
