ABSTRACT

Radiation therapy is used for malignant cancer treatment and may be used as a primary or adjuvant modality. It may also be used for palliative treatment, to provide symptomatic relief for therapeutic treatment. In addition, it may be used for nonmalignant conditions, including trigeminal neuralgia, pterygium, and pigmented villonodular synovitis, and for prevention of keloid growth and heterotopic ossification. This chapter addresses the basics of ionizing radiation in cancer treatment.
