ABSTRACT

The symbol of the 1939 World's Fair in New York was the Peri sphere, a huge dome, and the Trylon, a tall triangular spike, which was next to it. Within the Perisphere was Democricity, a model of an ideal world in keeping with the theme ofthe fair: "Building the World of Tomorrow." Van Arsdale believed that electricity would playa large part, resulting in many jobs in this future world, and, more to the point, in this Fair. The Fair was built on what had been a marsh in Flushing Meadows, Queens, not far from Van Arsdale's home, and close to La Guardia Airport, another prewar project providing employment for Local 3 members.
