ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to introduce a theoretical framework. The chapter elaborates on Baudrillard’s theories and discuss them together with relevant literature. Baudrillard is the central theme of my book, and my arguments are developed from his conceptions. Baudrillard is not a globalisation theorist, yet his idea of orders of simulacra can extend to conceptualise globalisation. His idea of social time in tourism is thought-provoking that critically approaches tourism. To stress the interconnectedness of globalisation and tourism, I suggest a concept of globalised tourism based on Baudrillard’s idea. I also sketch Baudrillard’s conceptions that are employed to study the complexity of representation in Thailand’s tourism.
