ABSTRACT

Workplace safety is composed of two things: physical factors and mental factors. The majority of what has been discussed in this book has related to the physical. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Department of Transportation, and US Environmental Protection Agency inspections will primarily be physical in nature. Many safety programs are built around first identifying what hazards exist in the workplace and defining actions that can be taken to eliminate those hazards. An example would be noticing that a machine presents the potential for pinching an employee’s body part. It may be difficult to apply blanket company goals to each employee or different locations if a multi-site organization is involved. The behavior and group dynamics may change from employee to employee or from one location to another. A word of caution when implementing behavioral safety is that communication must be developed and fully utilized with employees throughout the process.
