ABSTRACT

The design and introduction of behavioural contracts for speci®c out-of-session behaviours or courses of action (`homework') is a common strategy used in TA therapy. As a treatment strategy it has much in common with cognitive-behavioural therapy. Clients have different reactions to it ± some actively seek (and complete) homework, others ask for it, but don't complete it, and others very clearly say that they do not want homework. There is some research, mostly conducted by cognitive-behavioural therapists, that strongly suggests that homework and its completion is of great bene®t to therapy.
