ABSTRACT

Berne admonished therapists to attempt to `cure their clients in one session' (Berne, 1972). This position is emphasized in subsequent TA literature sources such as Stewart (1996). In my view, an overemphasis on briefer therapies does not bear much relationship to therapy as it is practised. It is also possible that an emphasis on briefer therapies and the expectation of change in relatively short periods of time can contribute to disillusionment on the part of both therapist and client. One potential result of disillusionment could be that it is a contributing factor to eventual therapist burnout.
