ABSTRACT

Increasingly, the discourse of migration is framed in the context of (in)security and fear. Fear of the unknown and undocumented immigrants plays a powerful role in that narrative. This applies to how asylum seekers are portrayed since they often travel without legal documents. This chapter analyses how the discussion about asylum seekers and refugees in Iceland is framed in the context of fear of increased diversity, and how the discussion makes a contrast between the asylum seekers’ and refugees’ experiences. It draws upon findings from discourse analysis of online discussion in Iceland and interviews with refugees and asylum seekers living there.
