ABSTRACT

Unfortunately, babies continue to be stillborn, die in utero or die within days of the birth. It proves to be an extremely difficult time for the families but also for the staff involved. There are a number of activities that need to be undertaken. The activities are: Encourage though don't force the parents to hold their baby and spend some time with them – this amount of time should be dictated by the parents themselves; sitting and listening/discussing events; take foot and hand prints, locks of hair, photographs, and provide additional identity bracelets; handle the baby gently – help the parents wash and dress their baby if they wish or do it for them; and the baby can be placed in the hospital mortuary until tests are completed and the baby is collected for funeral or cremation.
