ABSTRACT

The codlets are small, gadiform fishes found in pelagic habitats over the continental shelf, slope, and deep ocean. Adults are easily recognized and are characterized by small size (<12 cm), and fin placement. The body is elongate with maximum body depth ~1525% of standard length. The first dorsal fin consists of one elongate occipital ray. The second dorsal fin and anal fin mirror one another in shape and position; both are longbased and strongly lobed. The pelvic fins are jugular with 5-7 rays, 3 of which are elongate and extend beyond the origin of the anal fin.
