ABSTRACT

In the past, during the time that King Richard of England was at war with King Felip of France, they were both encamped with all of their men. The King of France had with him the French and the Bourguignons, the Champenois, the Flamands and those from Berry. King Richard had with him the English and the Normans and the Bretons and the Poitevins and those from the Anjou, Turenne, Maine, Saintonge and Limousin. They were at the bank of the river Sèvre, which flows by the foot of Niort. One army was on one bank of the river and the other was on the other side and they stayed like this for fifteen days. Every day they would arm and equip themselves to come into battle. But the Archbishops and the Bishops and the Abbots and the men in religious orders who were all seeking peace came between them and forbade that the battle should take place.
