ABSTRACT

Endangered Species (CITES) was enacted by the United Nations. Its aim was to ‘establish an effective system for regulating international trade in specimens which were or may become in danger of extinction’. The convention established two categories for endangered and threatened species: Appendix 1, which allowed no trade unless the species were bred in captivity; and Appendix 2, which allowed some trade and required countries exporting species to get UN-approved export permits.
