ABSTRACT

In the Law—in Torah, in halakhah—David Hartman discovers a wisdom and beauty and joy, a choreography of life, that organizes and enlivens Jews at work and at play, at home and on the street, in love and in grief, in beginning and ending and beginning again. This is a task to which Hartman has devoted himself in many articles and books, and his labors have borne much fruit, demonstrating that fidelity to the sources reveals certain stunning convergences between biblical faith and the faith of liberalism. Biblical faith, the faith rooted in the Hebrew Bible, provides a sustaining source of liberal pluralism, our bedrock belief in the freedom and equality of all, and the dignity of the individual. Hartman's great contributions have been to cultivate a spirit of reading, and thinking about, the Bible that allows such blessings to come to light.
