The development of a successful event bid is an exceptionally complex process. This chapter examines how prospective hosts demonstrate technical competency during the bidding process. It begins by exploring how bid committees are formed, who the key stakeholders are and what they bring to the bidding process, as well as offering an analysis of the various individuals and groups included in these committees. The chapter critiques the motives of these groups and their relationships to one another, as well as the implications for the prospective host in bringing them together. It also examines the process of developing the bid book itself, considering various components required in order to successfully secure hosting rights. Finally, the chapter turns its attention to the evaluation of bids by awarding bodies, examining the process and technical criteria which guide them when making a decision regarding the most technically capable prospective host.
