ABSTRACT

Morgan has described a gas chromatographic method for the determination of Bunker fuel oil in marine organisms at the 0.5 mg kg-1 level. Pentane-methanol extraction of tissues, using a blender, is followed by adsorption chromatography. Meyers investigated the occurrence of non-biogenic hydrocarbons in shrimp occurring in the vicinity of offshore drilling and petroleum exploration in the Gulf of Mexico. Clearly, a combination of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry would provide more useful information in studies of hydrocarbons in crustacea and would facilitate a clearer distinction to be made between contaminant hydrocarbons and non-biogenic naturally occurring hydrocarbons. The determination of chlorinated insecticides in crustacea has been discussed by several workers.
