ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION With the advent of microarray technology, the generation of a million data points from a single experiment is now commonplace. However, this explosion of data generation has not automatically equated to novel biological insights into neurotoxicology. Signifi cant advancements since the initial introduction of microarray technology have come at the data generation stage through large-scale collaborations between industry, government, and academia. Signifi cant advances at the data analysis stage have been made as well, in the form of novel computational and bioinformatic methods; yet, a consensus on the most appropriate method(s) for a given experimental design has not been reached. This chapter will provide a brief overview of microarray technology, its current applications in neurotoxicology research, common problems encountered with microarray data analysis, and novel methods developed for assessing the biological relevance of results from microarrays.
