ABSTRACT
Population growth, rapid industrialisation and rising standards of living have contributed to an increase in both the quantity and variety of solid wastes generated by industrial, mining, domestic and agricultural activities. This has also resulted in the depletion of natural resources. It has been estimated that about 19 billion tonnes of solid wastes will be generated annually by the year 2025 (Yoshizawa et al., 2004).
