ABSTRACT

A sort of motto for Creative Evolution occurs in a remark Bergson made in 1908 when discussing ways in which knowledge can be qualified. After insisting that knowledge can be limited to a certain part of its object without ceasing to be ‘absolute’, in the sense we discussed in chapter 6, he goes on: ‘Now, one of the objects of Creative Evolution is to show that the Whole is…of the same nature as the self, and that one grasps it by an ever more complete understanding [‘approfondissement’] of oneself’ (M, 774).
