ABSTRACT

Life cycle analysis (LCA) is normally conducted when considering the conversion of any biomass into biofuel. LCA provides an idea of the contribution to sustainability, as well as the determination of net energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) balance. There have been numerous attempts to determine the overall impact of a biomass renery using the “cradle-to-grave” approach, or what some would call, the “well-to-wheel” approach. This chapter describes various ways of estimating the complete life cycle of particular biofuels.
