ABSTRACT
Among the biggest problems that mankind is facing today is the progress toward a sustainable energy supply. Energy scenarios (Global Business Environment Shell International 2001; IEA 2003; European Commission 2006) project that the world’s annual energy consumption will increase steeply from the current 500 exajoules (EJ) per annum to 1000-1500 EJ by 2050.
