ABSTRACT

Man is unique amongst the mammals in many ways. One of them is the combination of upright stature and bipedal walking. We can walk and run on two legs. Meanwhile, our nearest relative, the chimpanzee, scampers around on four limbs. What caused our apelike ancestors to adopt this unique method of getting around and what kinds of physiological adaptions did it require? These are the questions we will examine in this chapter. Scientifically, it is not a resolved issue. There are still differing opinions on it.
