The publishing business has become a quickly changing kaleidoscope of new ideas as well as a creative reworking of old concepts. The death of the book has been predicted for countless years. This paper will examine some broad trends in publishing during the past few years and what they mean for the publishing business; libraries and librarians; the various formats of print, CD-ROM, and online; archiving; copyright; and for the technological “have-nots” in the future. The development of K-12 resources, branding, and value-added services are also discussed. It will explore the offerings of selected publishers including The Thompson Corporation, Bell & Howell Information and Learning, Facts On File, and netLibrary in order to see, what, if 4any, trends can be established.
