ABSTRACT
Ron and Janet Reimer grew up with similar rural backgrounds near Winnipeg, Canada. They were both descended from families of Mennonites, a strict religious sect rather similar to the Amish. When the Reimers first met John Money they immediately felt that he was someone they could work with. He was a respected and confident academic with great persuasive powers. When David turned 18, he was eligible for the money that he had been awarded in an out of court claim settled by St Boniface Hospital 16 years earlier. Subsequently, Money published an article detailing the reasons why David’s case should not be taken as evidence for the failure of the gender neutrality theory. Nevertheless, while academics continue to debate the best course of action, the life of David ‘the ultimate case study’ serves as a poignant reminder as to the crucial importance of the debate.
