ABSTRACT
The words man or male, woman or female, appear in neither the American Art Therapy Association’s Ethical Principles for Art Therapists nor the Art Therapy Credentials Board’s Code of Ethics, Conduct, and Disciplinary Procedures. There is no implication of male or female; in fact, the rule’s language is neutral, with the possible exception of the word exploit, which has a slight bite to it. In the scene, assign a gender to the exploited client, then assign a gender to the art therapist. The transgressions of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and expressive arts therapists seldom, if ever, reach the national stage. C. G. Jung was one of the earliest real-life therapists to have sex with a patient—at least according to the 2011 movie A Dangerous Method. Some researchers suggest that brain structure and chemistry are given too much credit for men’s aggression and lack of empathy and that behavior, itself, may shape the brain to help one conform to social expectations.
