ABSTRACT

I have made the point several times that one of the goals of ethnoarchaeological research should be to aid in the development of methods for inference justification. Research aimed at the justification of inferences has been called middle-range research. There is, however, a great deal of confusion over what is meant by this phrase, and there are dissatisfactions with the point of view (Raab and Goodyear 1984) as well as alternative approaches for which claims of superiority have been made (Gould 1980a; Schiffer 1985). This paper represents a further attempt at clarification.
