When in 1986 I was asked to direct a diploma performance at the Moscow Arts Theatre School, the choice of play that came very quickly to mind was Arthur Miller's The Crucible. An allegory of the McCarthy hearings, it stood equally as an allegory of the Stalinist purges in Russia.
